Women's rugby champion New Zealand lost for the first time in eight years when it was toppled 10-3 by England at Twickenham on Saturday.

New Zealand's Black Ferns had won the first test 16-3 a week before and thrashed England A midweek, but succumbed to their first loss since England beat them in 2001.

England captain and No. 8 Catherine Spencer scored the only try on her 50th cap before a record 12,500 crowd, following the men's test won by the All Blacks 19-6.

The Black Ferns will return to England next year to defend the Women's World Cup they have held since 1998.

England 10 (Catherine Spencer try; Katy McLean conversion, drop goal),

New Zealand 3 (Rebecca Mahoney drop goal).

HT: 7-3.
